USDA Releases State by State Impacts of Limited Wildfire Suppression In Recent Years

WASHINGTON, June 9, 2014 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture today released information showing how limited federal firefighting budgets have impacted states over the last two fiscal years (FYs 2012 and 2013). The state-by-state report provides examples of how funding for local wildfire preparedness, forest restoration, and other activities in nearly every state across the country has been used to instead fight fires when wildfire suppression budgets did not fully cover firefighting costs.

USDA Announces Funding, Issues Federal Order to Combat PEDv

Washington, D.C., June 5, 2014 – In response to the significant impact porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) and porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) are having on U.S. pork producers, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced $26.2 million in funding to combat these diseases. Additionally, USDA issued a Federal Order requiring the reporting of new detections of these viruses to its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) or State animal health officials.

Obama Administration Hosts First "Made in Rural America" Forum to Promote Rural Exports

Canonsburg, PA, June 4, 2014 -- The White House Rural Council today held the first “Made in Rural America” regional export forum with business owners and local leaders in Canonsburg. The one day meeting was hosted by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack delivered the keynote address. The forum kicks off a series that will include four additional forums to be headlined by Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, Small Business Administration Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, Export-Import Bank Chairman Fred Hochberg, and United States Trade Representative Michael Froman.

USDA Announces Programs to Conserve Sensitive Land and Help Beginning Farmers

WASHINGTON, June 4, 2014 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that farmers, ranchers and landowners committed to protecting and conserving environmentally sensitive land may sign up for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) beginning June 9. The Secretary also announced that retiring farmers enrolled in CRP could receive incentives to transfer a portion of their land to beginning, disadvantaged or veteran farmers through the Transition Incentives Program (TIP).

WASHINGTON, June 2, 2014 - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today kicked off the 6th annual Feds Feed Families Campaign at the USDA Headquarters in Washington D.C. The food drive is an annual event in which Federal employees in the Washington metropolitan area and around the country collect food for distribution by food banks, food pantries, and shelters.
